Essence Ultra Last Instant Colour Lipstick

Essence Cosmetics revamped their entire lipstick range and added 20 new shades to their permanent makeup collection of 2017: the Essence Ultra Last Instant Colour Lipsticks. Essence lipsticks have always been a passion of mine. Ever since they released their Longlasting Lipsticks back in 2014, I've pretty much purchased every single one the brand has ever created. The formula of their lipsticks is truly outstanding and there was no way I was going to miss out on this new collection.

For anyone who is familiar with Essence Cosmetics Lipsticks, you must be wondering if these are anything like the Essence Longlasting Lipsticks (which, side note, have been discontinued in Belgium entirely). I can assure you they are not, they have the exact same sleek packaging but carry different names, have different colors and the design of the actual lipstick isn't the same. I will be comparing all of the shades I purchased with the old (discontinued) Essence Lipsticks for those of you who are interested in knowing whether some of these are worth purchasing or not, as they might just be (almost) identical.

I purchased the first 8 Ultra Last Lipsticks from Essence, which are the most neutral of the entire collection with shades that vary from different tones of brown to plum colors. Even though I pretty much always rave about Essence Lipsticks because they are so amazing and unlike any other low budget lipsticks on the market, they do sometimes have one or two shades that I'm not too impressed with. That of course could be due to personal preference but I thought I'd share my thoughts on every individual color anyway. Let's have a look!

Essence Ultra Last Instant Colour 01 Sand Aside

01 Sand Aside is a lipstick with a very cool undertone, it's rather grey and actually reminds me of what a contour product is supposed to look like. The pigmentation is great and the color is nice, it just isn't something that is flattering for my skin tone. It's a very unique shade however, and not something I've come across before. 01 Sand Aside does not match any other Essence lipsticks that I already have in my makeup stash.

Essence Ultra Last Instant Colour 02 Cara-Melted

02 Cara-Melted is my favorite shade of all the ones I've purchased, it's the perfect nude! It's a brown with an orange undertone, the formula is creamy, creamier than Sand Aside, and reminds me of this one lipstick that Essence discontinued, long time ago, that happened to be a personal favorite of mine: 05 Dare To Be Nude. At first I thought they actually relaunched the shade but there's definitely a difference. Dare To Be Nude has a pink undertone in comparison, nevertheless I do think that for anyone who has been missing that shade, just like me, will be very happy with Cara-Melted! I highly recommend this lipstick, it's beautiful and very universal.

Essence Ultra Last Instant Colour 03 Everlasting Love

I think we can all agree that 03 Everlasting Love is an absolute fail. The lip swatch is terrible, I know, but I swear I tried to make it look more presentable. It's a very sheer, pink lipstick with a blue undertone. I don't understand why Essence is still releasing shades like this, because I honestly don't see this type of formula or color working for anyone. Other Essence lipsticks that have a similar effect are: the Longlasting Lipsticks nr 20 Get The Look and nr 22 The Girl Next Door and the I Love Nude Lipsticks nr 01 Wearing Only A Smile and 04 It's Nude Time. They are however not similar in color so if you do happen to appreciate lipsticks like this, this shade hasn't been done by Essence before.

Essence Ultra Last Instant Colour 04 Mauved In

04 Mauved In is a lipstick that is exactly up my alley, it's a plum lipstick with a grey twist to it, very cool toned in fact. The color is a little sheer, so if you don't have pigmented lips like I do, this might not be the right plum lipstick for you. There's one other Essence lipstick that comes very close to being a match to this shade, which is lipstick nr 08, from the Essence Velvet Matt collection (to my knowledge it doesn't carry a name). Considering Essence already released a shade that is so similar I wouldn't say Mauved In is a must have, also because the dupe is more pigmented compared to this new Ultra Last Lipstick. I do have to mention that the Velvet Matt nr 8 has a matte finish and Mauved In a natural finish.

Essence Ultra Last Instant Colour 05 So Un-Grey-Tful

05 So Un-Grey-Tful is another one of these lip balmy lipsticks Essence likes to throw into the range. Even though I don't think it fits me because it is so sheer, I do recommend this for people who have a deep complexion. It is a beautiful cool toned, purple lipstick that would look really pretty on darker lips. No other lipstick with this shade has been released by Essence previous to this one.

Essence Ultra Last Instant Colour 06 New-D Seduction

06 New-D Seduction is going to be a very popular lipstick in my opinion, as it is an exact dupe for the famous Essence I Love Nude Lipstick in the shade 05 Cool Nude. Cool Nude turned out to be a great dupe of several MAC lipsticks and lip liners, so if that's not good news I don't know what is. New-D Seduction is a beautiful mauve shade with great pigmentation for the perfect girl-next-door look.

Essence Ultra Last Instant Colour 07 Undress My Lips

07 Undress My Lips is my favorite plum lipstick in this new collection. It's creamy, full on color and can be worn on any kind of day, no matter which makeup you're wearing. Out of all the plums I bought, this is the one I would go for. I do think I should give you a heads up and tell you that this is an exact dupe (again) for the Essence Longlasting Lipstick nr 06 Barely There, so if you already have that one in your stash you can save your coins!

Essence Ultra Last Instant Colour 08 Eternal Beauty

08 Eternal Beauty is the only pink lipstick that I purchased. Although still some kind of a plum, it's way more pink than the other colors and it's really pretty. I don't want to bore you, but also this lipstick is very much a dupe for one of the old Essence lipsticks, the Longlasting one in shade nr 07 Natural Beauty. Natural Beauty was very loved, not only by me but also by many of you, so if you haven't tried that lipstick, I recommend you try 08 Eternal Beauty. This is another one of those shades that will pretty much fit any skin tone.

Do I think there's a difference between the Essence Longlasting Lipsticks and the new Ultra Last Instant Colour Lipsticks? Yes, I think the new formula is a little more sheer and I also noticed that it stains the lips, which I don't think the previous formula did, or I would have mentioned it in one of my many reviews. Is the new formula an improvement? In my opinion not necessarily but it's not bad at all, I actually like that Essence tried something new and revamped the colors. Even though they definitely brought back some of their old lipsticks, I'm not mad about it. I think this is a great opportunity, for those of you who didn't get a chance to try any of the discontinued ones, to purchase and enjoy them (again). You can buy the new Essence Ultra Last Instant Colour Lipstick for only €2.39 at Kruidvat.

  4. Hey Jolien! sorry to be totally off the subject, but I just watched Stephanie Nicole's video of the Fenty Beauty foundations. She says that they are nearly identical to Catrice HD liquid at 3x the price... so I thought of you & your viewers who are Catrice/Essence devotees. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLj95bKMb_c It's a very detailed review. Thanks again for all your great reviews & vids!! xxxxxxxxx

  6. I'm not interested in Fenty; my point in mentioning them was that it looks like Fenty copied Catrice!!! According to StephNic, who is really into the fine details. Catrice launched their fndtn out more than a year earlier. Hehehehe, us Catrice/Essence fans are onto the good stuff.

    1. My understanding was that this formula is exclusive to this Italian company, they simply sell it to whoever is interested :) We're onto the good stuff indeed :P Hahah
