TOP 5 Life Hacks That Could Improve Your Health



Today I want to share with you 5 of my favorite life hacks! They are not scientifically proven nor am I claiming to be a doctor or a specialist. I just want to share my personal experience about couple of health related problems I have ran into and found some great and simple solutions for. - Use toothpaste to treat burns

I'm not talking about severe blistered burns that need to be treated at a hospital, or a bad sun burn, I'm talking about mild burns you get from, for example, touching a pot or pan that is too hot (not open wounds). I use a mint tooth paste to treat those. I cover the whole entire burn with the toothpaste and let it set to dry. The mint will counteract the burning sensation, sooth the skin and treat the burn. I usually leave it on up to 4 hours, depending on how bad the burn is, after that you should be able to just peel the toothpaste off. Last time I used this trick I couldn't even tell I had burned myself that day. There was no dry, brown, burned skin, just nothing. You can also use this trick when you have very itchy mosquito bites, it will not treat the bite like it does with the burn, but it will prevent you from scratching it and the bite will heal much faster. 

- Drink apple cider vinegar to beat a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection)

I'm not a doctor and I'm not claiming that UTI's don't need the help of a medical professional, they do, but I'd like to share with you the fastest and easiest way to get rid of the discomfort that comes along with it. Apple cider vinegar is very popular in the beauty community, as it is often included in skin- and hair care DIYs. Some people drink it to prevent acne or improve their digestion, others like to apply it on their face or spray it in their hair for shine and extra growth. I only drink it when I have a UTI. I mix a soup spoon of vinegar with a glass of (cold sparkling) water and 15 minutes later the uncomfortable sensation of the Urinary Tract Infection is gone. I prefer using cold sparkling water because it makes it easier to drink, as apple cider vinegar is not exactly tasty. I've read you can drink this solution up to 3 times a day for a few days. Even though I've never had any issues doing so and even successfully have treated UTIs this way, I still want you to be cautious. It's a DIY after all so if your symptoms get worse or do not improve you should stop the remedy immediately and consult a doctor. 

- Drink Schweppes to prevent & treat cold sores/fever blisters

I've only suffered from cold sores (Herpes type 1) since a couple years but I can already tell you that they are incredibly annoying, contagious, ugly (because they seriously bust up your lips) and sometimes even painful. The first few times they appeared on my lips I treated them with something called Acyclovir. Despite it being recommended by many physicians my luck only lasted for a short while as the virus got used to the medication and then stopped responding to it. Taking Lysine was my next solution. Lysine is a food supplement you can take for treating and preventing cold sores, and it works, but it doesn't have a lot of impact when you don't catch your cold sore on time (I also have to admit I got pretty tired of popping pills after a while). Right now, I have something way more simple to keep the Herpes virus at bay: I drink Schweppes. I haven't had any cold sores popping up since and whenever I do it's gone instantly. I'm merely talking about sodas that contain Quinine, like certain Schweppes, tonic waters and Gini, Schweppes in my personal favorite. It's not exactly a healthy choice but I prefer drinking that than taking medicine or supplements. Soda is also easier to have access to when travelling. I'm not exactly sure why Quinine can keeps cold sores away but it's pretty awesome. 

- Lick your skin to check if you have bad breath

Having anxiety doesn't only have consequences for my personal life, it also is the cause of poor digestion, stomach issues and therefore bad breath (read my TOP 5 Foods for a Healthy Mind & Body for more info how to feed your body when you suffer from anxiety). Because I am aware of this problem I like to often do a 'bad breath check' by licking a patch on my skin and smelling it. It's very effective and immediately confirms whether I'm right or just being paranoid. You might not like the thought of licking your own skin but it works. Try it. 

- Buy an air purifier to prevent seasonal allergies

I've been allergic to pollen and dust for as long as I can remember but ever since I moved from the countryside to the city they've been particularly bad. Walking around with eyedrops and a nasal spray 24/7 wasn't exactly my thing so I invested in an air purifier for my home. Not an humidifier, an air purifier. I happened to purchase one from Medisana (a brand that is available where I shop for my electronics #nonspon) and I'm so happy I made the investment (it wasn't cheap). This is not a cure for allergies of course but it has improved my breathing situation tremendously. I can actually breath through both of my nostrils now, I rarely have migraines anymore and my eyes don't itch as much. I love it, it's the best electronic device I've bought in my life.
